Messages from the Mayor—
We are having our usual spring—rain, wind, and some sunny days. After watching the news where much of the country has been experiencing tornadoes, flash floods, and baseball size hail-stones, we can be thankful our weather is really boring!!
I hear a noon whistle now. It sounds a little anemic but it isn’t including the siren at City Hall which may help!!
We have been hearing from several of our constituents concerning drugs and crime in Tekoa. This topic will be on our agenda at the June 6 council meeting. We will have our Whitman County Sheriff, Brett Myers, at the meeting, so we can discuss proactive steps to address both concerns.
The Slippery Gulch Celebration is the weekend of June 18! The Slippery Gulch Committee has been planning this event for several months. The theme this year is the “60’s,” and it appears we will have class members from all the 1960’s graduating classes on that Saturday. The community center will be available for graduates to meet and visit. Refreshments will also be available.
The Empire Theatre committee has already started to promote the 60’s theme by having an Elvis Presley impersonator entertain a large audience. At this performance it was very apparent that more accessible restrooms are necessary for those who have a difficult time using the step stairway to the theatre’s restroom. By this fall, there should be a ramp connecting the theatre to the community center, where restrooms will be available for those not wanting to use the stairway.
At the recent fireworks auction, it was announced that Dale and Dorothy Simon are this year’s Grand Marshalls. Also this year we are honoring two military veterans, Jim and Rich Weatherly.
One last item about our celebration day: All vehicles need to be off Crosby Street (parade route) and Broadway Street (staging area for parade) prior to Saturday, June 18!!
Those of us who live on gravel roads would really appreciate drivers slowing down to help reduce some of the dust that settles on our property…which leads me to our goal of chip sealing all these gravel roads in Tekoa: I do believe our road levy will pass this fall, so we can continue to address the gravel streets.
One last thought: Thank you, all of you-who have called City Hall to report yards needing to be mowed. Please continue, because we contact owners and either offer to mow their yard ($30.00/hr.) or encourage owners to either mow themselves or hire someone!!
Hope to see you at our Slippery Gulch Celebration!
